The Nature Conservancy and Our Longleaf Pine tree
|
This winter, our third graders kicked off a special study of longleaf pines as part of their Georgia Habitats and Animals science unit.
These awesome kids adopted a tiny longleaf pine that Timber Ridge based Girl Scout Daisy Troop 13396 planted almost a year ago! This little tree was kindly donated by The Nature Conservancy and The Longleaf Alliance. As their excitement grew, a special writing contest developed. The submissions are coming in and the winner will be announced on Earth Day 2014, April 22, 2014! In the meantime, please enjoy the writing (below) that has already been submitted. |
Timber Ridge Elementary School 3rd Grade - Longleaf Pine Writing Contest:
To show our support of the Timber Ridge Outdoor Learning Environments, the third grade team has adopted the longleaf pine that was planted on Timber Ridge property by the Girl Scouts.
We walk by the longleaf pine tree each day on our way out to recess. To raise awareness about the planting of this beautiful species, we are holding a writing contest. Over the next two weeks students can research longleaf pines at home through the links listed below and beyond. Then they may choose to write a creative writing piece about the longleaf pine right outside our window. Students may choose to write an informational, narrative, persuasive, or poetry piece about the long leaf pine. Students: please create your masterpiece through a digital form if possible (aka- type it up).
Participation is not mandatory. However, we have introduced the project to and encourage all third grade students to participate in this writing contest. Selected writing pieces will be published on the Timber Ridge Outdoor Learning Environment page, which can be accessed from the Timber Ridge Home Page (scroll down towards the bottom).
The links/downloads below include information about the long leaf pine and activities for students to complete outdoors. The links below are meant to be a starting point for research and understanding. We encourage students to further their own research in whatever way works for them.
